Harsh cold winters with low humidity, dry indoor air can strip your skin and scalp off its natural oil and moisture content leaving it extremely dry and flaky. You therefore need additional care, pampering and some winter skin tips to feel and look gorgeous with soft supple glowing skin and hair that doesn’t look dry and brittle.

Few Winter Skin Tips

  • Keeping your skin moisturized is a must in winters to keep it soft and free from any dryness. Apply moisturizer to your face, neck hands and feet before going to bed to wake up with soft supple skin the next morning.
  • For best results, apply moisturizer immediately after your bath, this seals in the moisturizer.
  • Avoid bathing with extremely hot water as this can strip your skin off its moisture, lukewarm water is ideal; spend less time in your bath tub.
  • Opt for oil based moisturizers to combat dry skin, apply generous amounts frequently on face and neck and on your hands and feet.
  • Add few drops of almond oil or coconut oil to your bath tub, this helps retain moisture content.
  • Use creams with good amounts of SPF content, harsh winter sun can tan and damage your skin, creams with SPF 15 and over are ideal, apply on sun exposed areas.
  • Use hand gloves while you do your dishes using detergents.
  • Always carry a face cream, moisturizer and lip balm while you go out.
  • Opt for mild skin care products suitable for sensitive skin; avoid harsh soaps, shampoos, deodorants and products that cause skin irritation.
  • Drinking good amounts of water keeps you hydrated from within, keeping your skin soft and moisturized.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, the water content present in them is excellent for your skin.
  • Dry indoor air can be damaging to your skin and hair, try using humidifiers with 40 to 50 percent moisture levels.
  • Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly to avoid cracked, chapped lips. Avoid licking your lips often as this could dehydrate them.
  • Use a moisturizing shampoo for your hair , avoid using too many styling products on your hair. Also avoid coloring and streaking as this tends to make hair all the dry and brittle.
  • Limit blow drying and subjecting to your hair to hot rollers. Let the hair air dry naturally.
  • Hair needs more conditioning than the usual in winters as the scalp tends to get dry and develop dandruff resulting in hair loss, use leave-in conditioners to seal in the moisture making hair smooth and shiny.
  • If you prefer conditioning your hair right after you shampoo, once you apply the conditioner, leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse. Make sure you apply it only to the hair and not to the scalp.
