Laser Hair Removal

Tired with endless trips to your parlor to wax your arms, underarms and legs? You could well go for a laser treatment to get rid of unwanted hair on your face, legs, arms and other sensitive areas of the body. Laser hair removal is done by using laser light where the skin surface of the desired area is subjected to an intense beam of light. This permanently removes hair or stunts hair growth for a long period of time although its varies from person to person.

When is laser hair removal required?

People wanting to be rid of hair on the upper lip, chin, legs, bikini area or the underarms can go for laser hair removal treatment. This involves several sittings depending on the hair growth; it might not completely remove hair but sets you free from it for few months at least. Your hair color and the type of skin you have holds the key in how your body reacts to laser treatment.

Prerequisites for Laser Hair Removal

  • Discussing with your doctor about the treatment and assessing your past medical records is most important.
  • You need to be aware and have a basic understanding of how laser treatment is carried out and the pros and cons involved.
  • After deciding to go for it, make sure you do not have a tan as the skin might be prone to side effects and irritation.
  • Shave and allow the hair to grow into small stubble before the treatment and avoid any electrolysis, waxing or plucking.

How Laser Treatment Works

  • A hand held laser device is pressed against the skin where hair is to be removed with a gel rubbed in to protect the skin layer.
  • Once the device is on, a strong beam of light is passed through the skin surface to the hair follicles from where hair grows. This beam damages the root hampering hair growth.

Things to Take Care Of

  • Avoid going out in the sun at least after few days of treatment, use umbrella or sunscreen if you have to go out.
  • Avoid deodorants and perfumes on underarms and harsh lotions if the upper lip or chin is treated for laser hair removal.
  • Stay away from working out and exercise, as sweat might cause irritation over the skin surface subjected to laser beams.
  • Do not immediately pluck, wax or go for any skin treatments.
  • Rub the treated area gently without scrubbing.
  • Upon noticing changes in the skin like scars, pigmentation, blisters, see your doctor immediately.
  • Darkening of skin on the treated area or lightening sometimes occur , do not panic , seek medical intervention.
