Coloring Hair
Bored with the same hair style and want to go for a make over? Changing your hair color or using highlights is perhaps what you have been looking for. Choosing the right color that suits your skin and personality is necessary; you wouldn’t want to look like an entirely different person using the wrong colors. You could add that much needed interesting look with just a few streaks of color in your hair but with some careful color planning.
Hair Color Types
It’s important that you have some basic understanding on the type of hair colors so that you could choose what suits you best.
Permanent Tints
For lifting the hair color, hydrogen peroxide is mixed in. Hair cuticle opens up upon application of peroxide and the desired color sets in.
Semi Permanent Colors
Your hair can be made a shade darker with semi permanent colors with no color lifting. Lesser amounts of peroxide and the color, as the name suggest is semi permanent, lasts for about 15 to 20 washes.
Semi Permanent Vegetable Colors
Contains natural and vegetable extracts. Color sets in on the surface of the hair without actually coloring it. Lasts for about 10 washes.
Some Essential Tips for Coloring Your Hair
- Choose the right color that goes with your skin tone, chestnuts and honey shades look best on brown skin.
- Shampoo before coloring your hair; keep it clean with no dirt for coloring. Try and avoid using harsh shampoo and two in one shampoo with conditioner.
- First timers can take professional help and go exactly as per instructions on the hair color packs.
- If you want to be adventurous with your hair color , go in for highlight streaks of your choice rather than coloring fully ,for example if you want red on your hair but think that it might not go all too well with you but still want to try it , streak just a bit of your fringe.
- For an all blonde look, it is mush easier if you have natural dark brown hair. Consult with your beautician before you attempt to be blonde.
- Though red is the most adventurous and attractive of all, make sure it suits you.
- Chocolate browns and bronzes are safe and suit any skin tone without hassle; range of highlights could be used for coloring your hair for some drama.
- Mix in a tsp of color to your conditioner and leave it on for 5 minutes while you wash your hair after coloring, this way the color that is lost while shampooing will be refilled.
- Repeated coloring of your hair or not mixing right levels of peroxide can damage your hair, be cautious and avoid going from an all blonde to black and red to blonde.
- Once you color your hair, use the right shampoo and conditioners, go for healthy hair packs depending on your hair type, avoid harsh hair treatments, excessive blow drying as this damages the hair beyond repair and you might end up with dry frizzy hair and hair loss.
- Avoid being in the pool for too long, cover your hair with a hat or scarf while out in the sun.
